Technical information for professional clients
Foundations suited to the site
The ground matters
as much as the wall.
Foundation size depends on loads, bearing conditions, ground movement and nearby trees. Approved Document A provides guidance for applicable building foundations; its tables are not an automatic design for freestanding garden walls.
Ordinary freestanding garden walls generally do not need building regulations approval, but still need a sound design. Wall height, thickness, wind exposure and supports must be checked. Structural walls and walls supporting other buildings need separate assessment.
Concrete is a specification, not just a strength
GEN1 is a possible choice for unreinforced domestic foundations in assessed DC-1 ground. Where chemical conditions are aggressive, the concrete designation must match the assessed Design Chemical Class. Reinforced foundations need a designer’s specification. We do not infer a mix from “brick” or “block” alone.
